Brookhaven needs a new library. Where should it go?
Brookhaven has long been due for a new library to replace the current 6,800-square-foot building on North Druid Hills Road.
Now the city wants to know where you think it should go:
MARTA station: Within a new development at the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station
Brookhaven Park: At the corner of Peachtree and Osborne roads, within the footprint of the former DeKalb Community Service Board building that was recently demolished.
Current site: At the corner of Apple Valley and North Druid Hills roads, just south of the new city hall
You can take the city’s survey here. It’s open through Nov. 30.

Why does Brookhaven need a new library?
Given its location, the Brookhaven library should be getting more use. But the building is small (about one-third the size of the Chamblee branch) and has a really small parking lot. And, for families, the children’s section in the basement is less than ideal.
The backstory
The library was supposed to be replaced with funding from a 2005 county bond referendum. Progress toward a new library has been slow, in part because of wrangling over its location and a lawsuit brought by the city against the county over ownership of the area of Brookhaven Park including the site now proposed for the new library. Eventually, Brookhaven agreed to pay $1.6 million toward a new library if the county sold it the land for $1.
The county paid nearly $400,000 for architectural and design services for a new building on the current site and unveiled those plans last year. It’s unclear what will happen with the plans now or what funds remain for a new library. DeKalb County District 2 Commissioner Michelle Long Spears, who represents Brookhaven, didn’t respond to a request for comment.
