Brookhaven cuts number of pool fecal incidents in half

Brookhaven cut the number of times someone pooped in city pools by 50%, even as thousands more people visited the pools.

Brookhaven has public pools at Briarwood, Lynwood and Murphey Candler parks (plus the Ashford Park splashpad). The pools saw 61,000 visitors this summer, Aquatics Supervisor Julie Dobbs said, about 20,000 more than last summer.

Last year, there were 11 fecal incidents across the three pools. This summer, there were just 5, all of them at Lynwood, which has a splash pad that attracts more children. Fecal incidents mean pools close until the water is treated and safe for swimming.

Dobbs credited the improvement to pool staff educating visitors about the need for swim diapers and offering them free reusable swim diapers.

Next year, the city could require children under 3 to wear a reusable swim diaper over a regular swim diaper, she said.

“We're hoping to see that number be zero next year,” Dobbs said.

In other pool news:

Swimming lessons: In response to requests for swim lessons, the city partnered with SwemSchool to offer paid lessons and the YMCA for a series of free water safety classes.

Murphey Candler Park: Starting blocks were added to Murphey Candler Pool. The Murphey Candler swim team had been the only swim team in the area that didn't have them, Dobbs said.

Weather alerts: Lynwood and Briarwood now have on-site weather stations with monitors showing real-time information about weather delays. You can also download a phone widget to get real-time updates before heading to the pool.

Increasing access: The city is considering adding an aquatics wheelchair so children who use wheelchairs can safely be rolled down a ramp into the pool without damaging their regular chairs.
